The last time I walked through the doors of CBGB'S in NYC was 1981. So when I spotted this show on the roster I thought a roadtrip back in time would be in order. I usually don't drive into the city, rather park and take the train under the Hudson, but CBGB shows tend to end too late to catch the last train. Plus, driving downtown to lower Manhattan is....well..a bit stressful, but trying to rush around and catch the last train would be even more, especially since NASHVILLE PUSSY wasn't coming on till midnight. Rt. 287, the Turnpike, the tunnel, traffic, traffic, traffic. Not to mention the Bleeker street gridlock and trying to find a place to park that doesn't cost 3 times the amount of a round trip train ticket. Plus, I was breaking in a new Thundergoddess and was supposed to meet her at Newark station, but finally I just got directions to her house, hopped in Sweet Melissa (my car), and ventured on for a roadtrip to the lower east side, via Newark....and I got to meet Mom, so she could see I was cool, despite being twenty five years older than her daughter. Hehehe.
It wasn't too bad. Despite traffic, we ended up getting there and getting lucky, finding a parking spot within a block of CBGB'S. Man, it's been quite a long time since I've been down here. Every club, lounge, and restaurant was bustling with people. I love New York. It was a different kind of crowd than I was normally used to. Older and friendlier or just more drunk, one or the other. Cool, though. It was CMJ music fest time in the city and the show tonight was part of it, so there were alot of bands on the bill. NEBULA was good. A kind of 'stoner' Clutch-like band.
It wasn't a slammin', surfin' crowd, but it was stompin'! One of the fastest bands of all time was on next called ZEKE. These guys are awesome. They just blaze. However, they also have some awesome breakdowns for jumping and stomping. CB's is great! No barriers or bouncers. Real good for pics. ZEKE did an awesome set.
I planted my ass right under Ruyter's mic, cause she is sahhweet!! Wanted to get some good pics of her. NASHVILLE PUSSY is a good time live. I saw them once open for Motorhead and it was a blast! They used to have a girl on bass that breathed fire. Almost burnt my freakin' head off. These girls can play!! Ruyter kicks ass on guitar and they have a new bassist, Karen, who kicks ass, as well. Ruyter's husband Blaine does the vocals and guitar and he rocks!!!
They are an explosive, head bangin', stompin', sex fueled, obscene, in-your-face rockin' band...in plain English. Hehe.
They hit the stage rockin' and stompin'!! They did my favorite NP song "Piece Of Ass" which made me real happy. The new cd "Get Some" is awesome and they did most of that including "Come on Come on (F**k Yeah)" which Blaine said would be the single if it didn't have the word f**k in it. They don't have any songs without the word f**k in it!! They also did the classic "Gotta Keep F**kin'" which are the three words you must always remember, no matter how tough life gets. These guys and gals are so much fun. Ruyter at one point put her foot on my chest while she was jammin' and kept shoving this bald guys head next to me into her crotch. Freakin' awesome!! It was an awesome rockin' time in the city. I also got the coolest shirt that says I (heart) Pussy. Much thanks to Carol, for hookin' me up with this show. It was a blast. I got to meet the band too, which made the whole trip worth while. Hell ain't what it used to be...but it's good to see a band that's still f**kin' raisin' it!!!
