As 2005 began to wear down, I couldn't help but think of how awesome a year it was for shows. Every year seems to continue to get better. The outlook for 2006 was already looking good. I already have plans for a bunch of awesome shows. The first of the year stood out and I've been anticipating it for months. Hell yeah! There are some bad ass shows already planned. Goodbye 2005. Hello 2006. It ain't slowin' down any. Lots of good shiiiaaatt coming. Starting with freakin' SODOM in New York City!!!!This is another one of those bands that I thought I'd never get to see. I can't ever remember them coming to the US and I thought they were pretty much dead in the water. Ummm. NO.
German thrash legends SODOM, The Lords Of Depravity are afloat and alive and kickin'!!
My son, who bowls on the Junior Bowlers Tour, had an early Sunday morning tournament in Sinking Spring, PA. An hour and ten minute drive, starting at ten in the morning. Oh well, so much for my only day to get some sleep. Had to get up at freakin' seven AM. I knew it would be a rush around day on my only day off going to Sinking Spring and back to NYC. Fortunately, my son didn't do that well, (this is the only time you'll ever hear me say that) and didn't make it to the finals, so we were headin' home earlier than usual, making the rush a little easier. He usually accompanies me and my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna, to all the shows, but it was a school night and well...ya know. I was able to make it to Donna's in plenty of time to grab her and get a six o'clock train under the Hudson to Times Square. B.B. Kings is a small place. It's friggin awesome!! On the way in the security guy said "Absolutely no photography or recording devices allowed". That sucks. I had no photo pass. However, I did have a Fuji disposable in my pocket and walked in with it. Oh well, sneak photography then. I don't need no stinkin' badges!! Me and Donna walked in, grinned from ear to ear at each other.....and made our way up front. The first band was a band called FINNTROLL from Finland. They made an announcement that there was absolutely no picture taking or recording of any kind or your stuff will be confiscated immediately. Hehe. A bunch of real photographer's that I knew looked at me and smiled from the photog's pit. I gave them the OK signal. FINNTROLL was certainly something different. It was their first time ever in NYC and the place was packed with FINNTROLL fans. They had keyboards that sounded like an accordian and all the songs had this Finnish folk polka sound, mixed with hard driving Black/Death Metal. It was awesome. They were all wearing black Medieval type kilts and striped black paint on their faces. They were a freakin' Finnish Folk Black Metal Polka band. Every song was a fast, jump up and down, head bangin' polka that got the crowd chanting "eh eh eh eh". It was nuts! It was in another language too, but the crowd sang along and the band was amazed with the crowd response. There was a guy right behind me jumping up and down over my back screaming his face off. Obviously the biggest FINNTROLL fan in the universe. If not the biggest, certainly the most annoying. After about the sixth song, the accordian polka stuff got a bit tiresome, but they finished off the set with some heavy ass shiiiaaatt and the "FINNTROLL, FINNTROLL" chanting crowd, brought them back out for a heavy ass encore and overall they were awesome. Certainly fun! And, boy, do they love New York now!
Being an old, longtime thrash head, I can surely say the Germans are the best. Kreator, Destruction. Freakin' SODOM, man!!F**k Yeah!! We grinned those evil grins at each other, me and Donna, as the sweat had already begun to pour and we were front and center, just below The Angelripper's mic!! I leaned over and screamed in her ear, "Let's see everybody THRASH"!! The lights dimmed.....and the place exploded!!
I met a guy in the front, a SODOMANIAC, who had come from San Francisco. The tour was only six dates. Three of them were in Canada. "SODOM, SODOM, SODOM". The chants were thunderous! Bobby took the drums. Bernemann walked out with his camo colored guitar, and then Tom. The Angelripper. They ripped into "Among The Weirdcong" and "The Vice Of Killing". F**kin' A!!! Wreckin' my neck from the start. Tom screams "AAAAAgent Orange"!!My favorite song! Sends me into a moshing, thrashing frenzy!!! There were only a couple bouncers at each side and in the frenzy, I snapped some pics among all the other photogs who were right in front of me without being seen, Saaaaneekin' in the pics!!! Hell Yeah!! This was an elongated version of "Agent Orange" and Bernemann was crankin' the shiiiaat!!!!Nothing like watching a 20+ year veteran seeeeeeeeeering your eyes out on guitar. He was right in front of me. Rrrrriiipppiinn'!!!
They followed that onslaught with "Napalm In The Morning"!!
Everybody was jumping and screaming like freakin' maniacs!!! Tom was in such awe that he grabbed his own video camera and filmed the crowd. SODOM chants thundered through Times Square. "Blasphemer", "Witching Metal", "Outbreak Of Evil". I was a thrashing, fist pumping, hair flying, soaked and wet sweating, screaming mess!!It was unbelievable!! After "Wachturm", Tom says "Dis is for all you BITCHES out there!!" "EAT ME!" Another favorite of mine. They ended with "Remember The Fallen", but it was far from the end. The thunderous chants brought them back out and amazingly they did a speed metal version of "Surfin' Bird". It was crazy. Then, "The Saw Is The Law" and "Ausgebombt". They ended the encore with a new song called "Nothing To Regret" from their forthcoming new album. It kicked butt. Can't wait for that!! Still not the end. Nope. The roof was still connected to the building...somehow...but oh not for long. More thunderous chants and SODOM reappears for a second encore. The band was in amazement themselves over the awesome crowd. Bernemann walked in front of me and I stuck up my hand and he reached down and grabbed it and gave me a shake. I was in awe!! They kicked into "Ace Of Spades" by Motorhead. Shiiiiiaaaat!!!!!!!!! No more roof!! "Bombenhagel" and a medley of old speed classics finished the night off in blistering fashion. SODOMIZING Times Square harder, faster and louder than ever. SODOM LIVES!!!
It was a nice evening for a change, weatherwise. Me and Donna had a rather pleasant walk back to Penn Station and an even more pleasant train ride home. Necks wrecked and butts sore, but in pure satisfaction. 2006 has begun. The sweet aches and pains of 2005 now sweet memories. And tomorrow. The sweet aches and pains of 2006......have just begun. Oh F**kin' Yeah!!(ouch).
