The return of Carnivore? No way. This just can't be. F*********k yeah!!! Being a home grown Jersey boy that has been stompin' the east coast for twenty seven freakin' years....yeah I know Carnivore. I know Petuh. Petuh freakin' Steele! Before Type O there was a brutal, thrashin', stompin' freakin band from Brooklyn called Carnivore. It was brief but.......yeah I remember. Now reformed with Steve Tobin, Paul Bento (Metal Health Association) and Joey Z. (Life Of Agony) Carnivore bloodies the east coast again! Shiiiiiiaaaatt!! A hurricane couldn't keep me away. Uhhhh!! Just my freakin' luck. Ernesto rides up the coast pissing about 11 inches of rain on us. Shiiiiiaat!! I'll swim to The Starland. Add to the fact, that Kenny and Johnny from Type O have an awesome band called Seventh Void, who will be opening and yeah......I'm doin the freakin' backstroke.
Driving down route 18 in inclement weather is something I'm totally used to. Going to shows and crappy weather go hand in hand. All the years going to the old Birch Hill Nite Club through rain, blizzards, hurricanes (Floyd), you name it. So, I was hydroing down 18, the worst of Ernesto over, after going around downed trees and stuff to get my best friend and assistant photographer, Donna, from her house out in horse country, and actually made it for the earlier bands. For once, there was some good ones, except for the one obligatory metalcore, screamcore band. I was excited to see Seventh Void. They had Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly from Type O. It was good to see those guys. New York legends. The night was full of legendary New Yawkers. Seventh Void was awesome!! They are good and heavy. Kenny is awesome as the frontman and is backed by some kickass guitar and bass performances. Of course, Johnny on the stool makes for some good pounding too. An all together excellent set and I'll be looking for more from these guys. Then, Kenny introduces an old friend. Petuh!!!!!!!! Pete Steele comes out and they destroy the place with the Type O song, "Kill All The White People". Freakin' awwwwwwwwwwesome!!! Nuts!!! Real good seein' these guys together up there.
The next hour and a half was insane. Carnivore man!! They walked out on stage and Peter says, "O.K. New Jersey. The honeymoon is over!!" Then, they all throw down their instruments and walk off. The crowd starts chanting the familiar Type O, "You suck, You suck" chants. They return with full war paint on and I don't have words to describe the destruction that ensued. It was the shiiiaaat!!! Pete said he had been waiting twenty years for this and so have I!! They did just about everything. "S.M.D.(Suck My Dick)", "Predator", "God Is Dead". One of the most amazing performances I've seen this year in the form of "Helter Skelter". It removed the roof. I was in my glory. Pete is godlike to me and I can't even describe how overjoyed I was watching Joey Z. perform after a disappointing Life Of Agony release. I love Joey. These are some of my all time New York heroes. The crowd screaming CAR-NI-VORE during the song "Carnivore" was thunderous and it was good to see some old fellas surfin' and stompin' like madmen. It was a three encore performance. They left the first time and the Hitler chants began and awwwwwwww faaaaaaawwwk!! "Jesus Hitler". They blew out the freakin walls. They left again only to return to the sound of air raid sirens and "World Wars III and IV". Absolutely amazing!! People flying overhead everywhere!! A sweatin', surfin' stompin' safari!! But, that's not it. They came out a third time and Pete kicked into Black #1 and stopped and said "Oops wrong band" and they finished us off with "Sex And Violence" wearing bloodsoaked aprons, while the guys from Seventh Void and some female nurses threw buckets of blood on the crowd. It was an outragious finish to a kickass thrashing good time.
